Description

The medical term "vaginitis" refers to a variety of conditions that result in an infection or inflammation of the vagina. Types of vaginitis include :

Bacterial vaginosis : the most common type of vaginitis.
Candida infections
Trichomoniasis : common sexually transmitted infection

Symptoms

According to the type of infection, symptoms may vary.

A painful or itchy vagina
Light vaginal bleeding or spotting
Uncomfortable, swollen, or cracked skin surrounding the vagina.
A vaginal discharge that is different from the usual in color, smell, or thickness
Vaginal dryness

Causes

According to the type of vaginitis, causes might vary as follows :

Bacterial vaginosis :
Due to overgrowth of the bacteria naturally found in your vagina, which upsets the natural balance.
Candida infections
Due to a naturally occurring fungus called Candida albicans.
Trichomoniasis :
Due to parasites and is often sexually transmitted.
The risk factors to develop vaginitis include :

Hormone adjustments
Sexual behavior
A sexually transmitted disease
Drugs, such as antibiotics and steroid injections
Spermicides used as a form of birth control.
Unmanageable diabetes
Using hygiene items like vaginal spray, bubble bath, or vaginal deodorant
Douching
Putting on wet or constricting garments
Using an intrauterine contraceptive device

Diagnostics

Medical history review.
Pelvic exam.
Lab testing.
Perform pH testing.


Treatment

The type of infection and the organism responsible for the illness will determine the best course of treatment for vulvovaginitis.

Domestic remedies :
Apply a cold compress.
Use over-the-counter medications.
Prescription drugs :
According to the type of vaginitis, treatment may vary.

Bacterial vaginosis :

Metronidazole oral tablets or metronidazole gel to be applied topically to the affected area.
Clindamycin cream is to be applied topically to the vagina, clindamycin oral tablets or vaginal capsules.
Inidazole or Secnidazole oral formulations
Candida infections :

Over-the-counter antifungal cream or suppository, such as Miconazole, Clotrimazole, Butoconazole, And Tioconazole.
Prescription oral antifungal medication, such as Fluconazole.
Trichomoniasis :

Metronidazole or Tinidazole oral tablets
