Description

Respiratory symptoms are extremely common during pregnancy. This is because of the attempt of the physiological adaptation of the respiratory and circulatory systems to pregnancy. Pneumonia is one of the most common pulmonary diseases during pregnancy which is an acute inflammation in the lungs. It may lead to premature delivery, low-birth-weight infants, and other serious maternal complications. Pneumonia occurs in the pregnant population with a frequency equal to that in the general population.

Symptoms

Fever
Shivering
Cough
Sputum
Chest pain
Shortness of breath
Weakness
Headache
Nausea
Muscle aches
Wheezing

Causes

Bacterial infection (The most common cause)
Viral infection
Fungal infection

Diagnostics

In addition to the symptoms and physical examination by the Chest and Respiratory doctor, tests can be used for diagnosis such as:

Chest x-ray (a test used to produce an image of the lungs to show if inflammation exists).
Laboratory tests (a blood sample is taken to examine the complete blood count in addition to other tests, Sputum, and blood cultures are done for diagnosis and identifying the type of bacteria causing the disease).


Treatment

Giving oxygen if oxygen in the body is not sufficient.
Chest physiotherapy to clear out secretions and aid in oxygenation.
Antibiotics to kill the bacteria causing the infection (ex: Amoxicillin, Cefuroxime, Azithromycin, Clarithromycin).
