Adnexal tumors

Description

Adnexal tumors are masses that grow in the fallopian tubes, ovaries, and the tissues around the uterus. Most of them are benign and can affect women at different ages. They are a frequent occurrence in women of reproductive age. With age, young women are more likely to develop malignant adnexal masses.

Symptoms

Most of the patients don’t have any symptoms but they may include :

Pelvic pain
Abnormal uterine bleeding
A feeling of bladder fullness
Increased size of the abdomen
Gastrointestinal symptoms
Unexplained weight loss
Fatigue
Visit a Gynaecologist if you have any of these symptoms to be diagnosed and treated properly

Causes

The causes of the adnexal tumors may be related to abnormalities in female reproductive organs or other causes.

Gynecologic causes :

Luteal cysts
Polycystic ovaries
Pregnancy outside the uterus
Tubo ovarian abscess
Other tumors
Non-gynecologic causes :

Abscesses, cysts, and cancers of the gastrointestinal tract or other abdominal or pelvic organs.

Diagnostics

Adnexal tumors are usually discovered by incidence during a routine gynecologic examination or ultrasound imaging.

Pelvic examination (a physical examination done by the Gynaecologist to help in diagnosis).
Transvaginal ultrasound (an imaging procedure in which ultrasound waves are used to produce an image of the uterus to detect any abnormality).

Treatment

If the tumor is large in size or causes symptoms to the patient, then it should be removed surgically. However, if it doesn’t cause any problems, no intervention is needed. If malignancy is suspected then the patient should be referred to a Gynaecologic oncologist.
