Aphasia is a language disorder that occurs due to damage in the left part of the brain. It results in difficulty in speaking and understanding language as well as writing and reading. Different types of aphasia differ in the degree of communication ability impairment. This condition affects one-third of stroke patients.
The patient’s symptoms may differ according to the type of aphasia and may include :
Inability to think of the words that he wants to say
Saying wrong words that may or may not be related to the subject
Switching sounds in words
Having difficulty in saying a whole sentence
Saying sentences that don’t make sense
Find it difficult to understand what people say especially in noisy places or when there's a group of people
Not understanding what people say when they talk fast
Having difficulty understanding jokes
Having difficulty reading books
Having difficulty using numbers or calculating something

This condition is caused due to damage in the left part of the brain which is responsible for language, this damage may be caused by :
Stroke
Traumatic head injury
Brain tumor
Neurodegenerative diseases (ex: Alzheimer’s disease)
Diagnosis depends on symptoms, medical history, and asking questions to the patient to assess the case, other diagnostic tools are used such as :
Computed tomography scan (a procedure in which x-ray and a computer are used to produce an image of the brain).
Magnetic resonance imaging (a procedure in which magnetic fields are used to produce an image of the brain).
In some cases, language skills may recover spontaneously without treatment. However, the majority of people receive speech and language therapy to improve their communication abilities and language skills.
Speech and language therapy is the main treatment method that aims to improve the patient’s ability to communicate and restore the lost language skills. Therapy can be done in small groups or virtually by using computer to help the patient to be treated without the need to leave his home. It also teaches the patient different ways to communicate for example by using pictures or electronic devices.
