Uremia is a condition that is known as “urine in blood”, it occurs due to waste product build-up in the blood instead of being removed by the kidney. It leads to fluid accumulation and electrolyte, hormonal, and metabolic abnormalities. It usually occurs with the end-stage chronic renal disease, but it can occur in acute kidney failure as well. End-stage renal illness is 1.2 times more common in men than in women.

Uremia is caused by the damage of the kidneys due to chronic kidney disease, which makes the kidneys unable to function well leading to accumulation of the waste products instead of excreting them outside the body through urine. The kidney can be damaged by acute kidney injury in some cases.
Many diseases can cause chronic kidney disease such as :
Diabetes mellitus
High blood pressure
Inflammation of kidney filtering units
Inflammation of kidney tubules
Genetic or cystic diseases
Urinary obstruction due to prostate enlargement, kidney stones, or tumors
The diagnosis depends on the symptoms in addition to other diagnostic tests such as :
Laboratory tests (a blood or urine sample is taken to measure the amount of a waste product called creatinine to know how well the kidney is functioning in addition to measuring the levels of other waste products in the blood).
Ultrasonography (an imaging procedure in which ultrasound waves are used to produce an image of the kidneys to detect the presence of changes, damage, or obstruction).
Dialysis : A procedure to remove waste products and excess fluids from the blood if the kidneys stopped working or are not functioning well.
Kidney transplantation : A surgery that’s done when the kidneys stop functioning well. the kidney is replaced by another one from a donor.
