Description

A pancreatic abscess is an area filled with pus in the pancreas. 

Symptoms

Symptoms of a pancreatic abscess may include :

       Severe abdominal pain
       Fever
       Inability to eat
       Nausea and vomiting
Visit a General Practice doctor (General Practitioner) if you have severe abdominal pain, you might be referred to a Gastroenterology doctor (Gastroenterologist) for proper diagnosis and treatment. 


Causes

A pancreatic abscess is frequently affecting people with :

       Pancreatic pseudocyst
       Severe inflammation of the pancreas that becomes infected

Diagnostics

Adding to the physical examination, your doctor may request the following imaging tests :

       Abdominal CT scan
       MRI of the abdomen


Treatment

       Antibiotics (imipenem, metronidazole + fluoroquinolone)
       Abscess drainage can be done through an endoscope using endoscopic ultrasound in some cases.
       Surgery to drain the abscess and remove dead tissue is often needed.
